I will be sharing some tips with you guys about how to start a proper blog and have it ready to be monetized and generate a decent amount of money. There are a lot of schools in the industry of blogging and the way it’s done, so all the information that I will be sharing with you is what I have learned from the different schools with time. As to not cause any confusion and to best make use out of the information, each topic here will be divided into parts and segments.
Today I will list a couple of tips that will mainly focus on how start your blog and have everything planned before taking any further step.
1- Why do you want to blog?
First of all, you need to ask yourself why you want to blog, and what your purpose for blogging is. Some people blog for fun, some because it’s part of their job, while others blog simply for making money online. So basically, I will be your step by step guide on how to get your blog on the go and ready to be monetized.
2- What are your interests?
To make money from your blog, you need to write about a topic that you know well about because people are always looking for more information. Many schools say that you need to identify a niche in the areas which you have good knowledge in and start blogging about it. I honestly do not see that this is the best solution in most cases, it depends on “the” niche and the knowledge of the person. If the niche topic was narrow, you won’t be able to write more than 100 articles about it, what will you be doing afterwards? So mainly, you have got to write about a topic that people search for and at the same time, you should be willing to write about as to not get bored half-way through (which is considered as the worst sin to any blogger).
3- What do you want to call your blog?
Now you know why do you want to blog, you have goals to achieve and you know what are you going to talk about, now it’s time to choose a name for your blog. There are many points that should be considered when choosing a blog name. It should be the same as the domain name, a lot of people change the whole name of the project because of the unavailability of the .com of their desired name. The second point is your domain name should be spellable over the phone, what is meant here is that once you say it to a friend over the phone, they can easily write it down without waiting for you to spell it for them, so just forget the dashes, shortcuts and numbers which would harm your domain name. Always try to have a domain name that is easy to remember, therefore try having it reflect what you do and what your readers would say about you. If you found a domain name with a keyword of your industry, that would be great! But never go with domain that consists of more than two words (remember, NO DASHES), that doesn’t mean having a longer domain name won’t work its just that a shorter, easier one is more likely to get you where you want. Finally, you should take care of the TLD of your domain, you get a .net or .info or .cc or what ever, but .com is always the best and the most memorable TLD, I highly recommend going .com rather than anything else.
4- I have everything ready to start my blog, what now?
You have the domain name, you know what you’re going to blog about and you have your goals ahead, what comes next? You need to create a brand. Yes, a brand is very important right from day one! And you have to invest a bit on creating your brand, I’m not saying to pay a 3 digit amount while your still starting up, but you need to get a proper logo design and a theme. I will be sharing in other articles how to get a proper logo for less money and same thing goes for the themes. You must also decide before blogging which blogging platform you are going to use for. There are a lot of blogging platforms; Blogger, Drupal, Joomla, MovableType, Typepad, Blogsmith, WordPress and much more but WordPress is the one with the highest market share and user-friendliness, not to forget their support forums and 3rd parties specializing in WordPress support cases.
Once you have decided what you want your blog to be about, it would be very useful to start preparing articles for when your blog is ready. This was you will save you time and effort, and then you will have yourself a pipeline of work for the time ahead.

October 5, 2009 at 11:26 amThank you for this post.
It reminded me that I blog to try and help people, and that many activities I’m doing are giving me less time for that original goal.
Looking forward to future posts,
Jade

October 6, 2009 at 12:56 amFiras,
I found your blog through a good Twitter friend of mine @mikecj.
Nice blog BTW.
I like your nice simple points to this post. Some things that might seem so logical but many fail to do them.
Many new bloggers start up and just jump in feet first. This often leads to lots of changes down the line, some of which can be avoided. Those being the points you raise here in your post.
Keep up the plain and simple and meaningful posts

October 29, 2009 at 9:38 pmThis is a very good beginners and “get-back-on-track” type of post.
I think your point about choosing or not choosing a niche is very important. My blog is about technology, tech culture, tech education, etc. and sometimes I think that it is too broad. But, I may never run out of post ideas! So, I think I may be able to live with it!
Got directed here from EricaSays and I’m glad I did!
