I was really excited when I received my Google Wave invitation and couldn’t wait to try it but when I did, I was disappointed for many reasons. It bothered me to realize that there were no people over there, it’s like being on an island by yourself. If you are getting the same feeling, you can try out Google’s Public Waves. Yes, Google Wave has a public wave feature which many people do not know about, I was introduced to it by chance also. Public Waves are mainly waves that are for all Google Wave users and everyone can participate and view the wave’s threads.
How can I create a Public Wave?
All you have to do in order to create a public wave is to add public@a.gwave.com to your contacts, you will receive an error message informing you that this contact does not have a Google Wave account, press Enter and you will find this account added onto your contacts list. Either you create a new wave and invite this user to it, or choose the user from the contacts list and you will see a pop up with an option to create a new wave with this user.
In order to view available public waves, you should search for with:public. When doing so you will see a HUGE list of public waves. If you want to filter these wave’s into one more level, search for with:public [keyword] the keyword could be anything you like or are interested in.
I think that public waves are very beneficial and one key feature that all users would love to use. You can get to know new people from your industry, find valuable information, create a feedback channel for your products so all users could discuss issues related to your products, in addition to all the above, there is a big room on how to use public waves.
One more thing, as a gift from SteitBlog to all its loyal readers, I still have a couple of extra invitations left. If you need one, just drop me a line asking for one so I can send the invitations.
P.S: Google Wave’s invitation takes from 2-3 days to arrive. I will be following the rule of “First come, first served” till the invitations finish.

This tip is very helpful and useful considering when I received my invitation from you I was like okay now what do I do?
Having this public timeline will allow me to find certain waves that connect to what I want to learn or talk about and then continue to share more conversations with those people. What would be nice is to have a place where there is a list of people wave account and the privacy to allow them to add to your contact list would work like Facebook does (accepts) friends.
It is crazy by just the amount of new waves on the public timeline and adding a keyword is very key otherwise it gets out of hand. Before you get done reading the subject of one wave, 5 more appear right above it. Since, starting this comment there have been 138 more waves. Haha
But, thanks again for this very helpful tip, especially for Google Wave beginners.

November 6, 2009 at 12:39 pmVery cool Steit. Just tried out the public bot. It’s a bit messy so you certainly need to put in some keywords to get the sort of waves and people you would want to communicate with.
A few things I’ve noticed with Wave
- I can’t seem to edit my profile. I click my picture and hit edit then nothing seems to happen. The edit profile button is actually greyed out for me now so maybe they’re fixing something.
- Google wave seems to use a lot of computer resources. I’m on a 3-year old macbook but it’s struggling a bit, I couldn’t browse a wave on the public timeline that had over 99 ‘blips’ (replies, comments etc)
Obviously it’s in early stages. I only have a couple of contacts so once everyone gets on the wave this will be really awesome.
I saw in the demo videos that they are integrating their waves with their blogs – I wonder if this can be done with wordpress based blogs and not just blogger.com blogs as they show.
Exciting times ahead!

November 6, 2009 at 2:53 pmSarge, it is a mess if you dont use keywords! of course lol In order to edit your profile you should search for a wave that you can change your profile from, such as the “settings” wave, i cant really remember and I am using the iPhone right now. And I have realized the same thing regarding, public waves, that it comsumes a LOT of resources, and some of the overloaded waves, just freeze the whole thing and ask to report the error to Google! That is normal since it’s in a pre-alpha phase yet. I didnt hear yet of anybody who already integrated his waves with his blog or sth, I cant wait actually!
Thanks Sarge for your inputs!

If you happen to have any more invitations, I could really use one. I’m currently getting my masters in multimedia and am looking at using Google Wave heavily within my graduate project. I plan on incorporating it into an online educational model aimed towards kids with learning disabilities. It is such a cool and useful tool. I just wish that I had stumbled upon it a little earlier. Thanks.
