Generating money from a blog is not a big deal; everyone can easily do it from their first month! Personally, my blog generated around $100 from different affiliate links and a few bucks from EasyAdSense in its first month. Honestly, generating money at this time was not a priority at all compared to building a proper readership and concentrating on quality content.
What I aim for and consider a BIG deal is generating proper income from my blog and have it become my 9-5 job. AdSense or Direct Ad selling will not do the trick in the early stages of your blog, since it needs a good chunk of traffic in order to be converted into clicks and therefore earn good $$$.
If you are a regular SteitBlog reader you would realize that I have been pushing all bloggers lately to start building their mail lists from day one and design beneficial products and sell it to their readers. I am currently working on my first e-book which will be available very soon, yet my blog is 2 months old, but I have good content that could be grouped together and hence create an e-book. An e-book’s success depends on its content, if the content is what the readers are looking for, then the e-book will sell and your readers will spread the word about it. I believe that an e-book is a good way to promote yourself, your knowledge, build a great readership and generate good amount of money should it be a premium e-book.
Let’s say you have created a kick-ass e-book and you want to sell it or share it with your readers, how are you going to do this? Here comes the role of mail lists. With the click of one button you can send an e-mail to all of your readers with all information about it and the sales pitch with a link to a download or a shopping cart. That’s why I push all of my readers to start building their mail lists from day one, even if it was not used at the time.
Get back to your blog and see which articles have been viewed the most; this will be an indicator on what people like from your blog. Get different articles under the same category, group them together, do some changes that will make the content suitable for an e-book. All that is left now is the layout design and then you are ready to offer your e-book to your readers!
Why don’t you do it right now? It’s a great experience, I am SO enjoying it. It will also generate a good amount of money if you decide to sell it. It will also create a viral brand awareness and loyal readership if it was distributed for free. Give it a go.

December 6, 2009 at 12:13 amCool article! Really enjoyed reading that.
Personally, I’m just planning my first “proper” ebook. I’ve decided to make it a massive guide which will (hopefully) bring in lots of affiliates to sell it for me. However, one of the things in the plan is to write 2 or 3 shorter ebooks and give them away free to build a list. That way, not only do I get a list of people who’ll probably be interested in my paid ebook, but I’ll also learn a lot from writing the free books, so I think it’ll be worth it! :)
By the way, this is a really cool blog you’ve got here… nice work!

December 6, 2009 at 1:07 amAwesome post Steit. I am planning an ebook next month. It will probably be a free one to build a list, but I plan to write a few short ebooks (20 or less pages) which will more than likely be given away for free.
In the more distant future though I hope to write an ebook that will be sellable :)
Building a list, as everyone says is VITAL to our blogging success! Along with that, trust and great content ;)

I am planning another e-book. First one failed miserably. Your post was a voice telling me to get going and try again.

December 7, 2009 at 5:38 amSteit,
In couple weeks I actually plan on writing a small e-book for LifeNotion that will focus on a specific category of interest. This is what I will try to do on a regular basis so basically my blog will turn into a blog full of specific category-related guides that will help out anyone that visits.
While talking with Sarge from http://www.beginnerblogger.com he said one day, during a talk we had, that the best thing you can do to make your blog stand out and be successful is offer/deliver a great product. I see this great product being an e-book with good content.
Best Regards,
Derek
