5 Tips For Writing A Killer Guest Post

You might have read earlier on SteitBlog “6 Reasons Why You Should Guest Post” which focused on why every blogger should be submitting guest posts on different blogs in the sphere. As promised, I am writing today an article on how to write a killer guest post. One thing you should know though is that the acceptance or rejection of a guest post has no rules; it depends on the blogger hosting the article. I once proposed a guest post to a blogger; it was rejected and then sent to another and was HIGHLY welcomed. It is a matter of taste at the end of the day.

1- Give the maximum.

When guest posting, don’t be stingy with the information you provide to the host blog audience, in the contrary; you should be giving out your best, it is your chance to promote yourself and your knowledge. The more beneficial information you provide, the more likely you will be gaining new readers, loyal ones.

2- Don’t be superman.

When writing an article, whether it was a guest post or an in-house post, you shouldn’t be acting as superman! Be yourself, share your experiences and let people benefit out of them. Make sure that you don’t over talk about yourself.

3- Write about something related.

When guest posting, you should be talking about something that would be of interest to the audience of the host blog. Otherwise it might be rejected by the host blogger, and if it passed through; it won’t get the attention of the readers as a related article would do. Relevancy is the key, always!

4- Don’t fill it with links.

Stuffing an article with links, specially affiliate ones, is really not the best way of making money. First of all, it will most probably be either rejected by the host blogger or he/she will be omitting all the links. If approved, the readers will feel offended with such activity, even if it was published on your own blog.

5- Take care of your bio.

Some host bloggers have their own way of introducing the writer of the guest post and some others allow you to write your own. If you were allowed to write your own bio, then make sure that it is short and says it all. Make sure you focus on your strengths and areas of knowledge.

You should expect your article to be rejected for unexpected reasons. Don’t let this point get you down, let it be a challenge where you should work on your writing and match the requirements of the host blogger.

What points do you take into consideration when writing a guest post?

Cool article. Personally, when I write guest posts I try and imagine it’s an article for my blog. After all, you’re writing the article to attract new visitors, but if they come to your site to see your writing is completely different to that in the article, they’ll feel hard done by and maybe even cheated.

Like you’ve said in your post… just be yourself!

These are some good tips. I’ve been meaning to write some guest posts, i’m just trying to narrow down the topics to be applicable to the audience at each blog.

One thing I am unsure of is who retains the rights to the article?

@james, thanks for your comment! You should be guest posting, seriously! Regarding the rights of the article, it’s an agreement between the writer and the host blogger, but in most of the cases, the host blogger retains the rights of the article and the content should be unique!

This is a very important point that I missed, Thanks a lot for raising it James!

Best,
Steit

Steit,

I love the article as all five points you make are very crucial. I have been publishing guest posts on WeBlogBetter.com. Guest posts are a crucial thing when not only promoting your blog but getting a feel of what you really want to write about and how you are going to diversify yourself and/or your blog.

Additionally, I feel that it help connecting with the person first so they get a feeling of what your personal opinions are in general and would more likely accept your guest posts. But, this gets hard with blogs that receive many guest post requests since their blog generates large amount of traffic.

I do have one question? What would be your advice on attracting people to write guest posts? (could this be another article to the “guest post series”?)

Best Regards,
Derek

These are some fantastic tips, I’ll be trying some of them next time I get the chance at a guest blog post. I’m hoping to be writing one soon for my friend’s blog :)

Some cool tips here.

I’ve just started getting into guest posting as my blogs not that old. For the posts I have written for others, I’ve always tried to write for their site not mine but made sure my writing style and flavour in to it.

Steit, you said right at the end about not being put off if your post is turned down. Do you think that a guest blogger can reuse a rejected post?
